ABADDON INCARNATE [Irl]

Salut ! Que se passe-t-il en ce moment du côté du groupe ? Des dates de concerts sont-elles prévues ? Quelques mots au sujet de Nadir ? Est-ce que les chroniques ont été bonnes dans la presse ?

Hello ! Le groupe est très actif en ce moment, nous décollons pour une tournée australienne le 1er février et nous serons là-bas pour un mois à défourailler notre puissance de feu brutal grind. Quand nous reviendrons, nous prendrons quelques mois de repos puis nous repartirons pour un mois sur la route à travers l'Europe avec DESECRATION en avril. Cette tournée sera organisée par les Français de Skull Fucked Promotion et nous finirons la série par une apparition au festival du même nom.

Par rapport aux chroniques, nous avons un beau soutien de la part des webzines underground mais les gros magazines commerciaux ne s'intéressent pas beaucoup à nous parce que nous n'avons pas de fric pour leur graisser la patte. Mais laissons le temps au temps, nous avons tous un bon sentiment par rapport au futur et vous entendrez bien plus parler du groupe dans un avenir très proche.

Je dis dans ma chronique (voir ABADDON INCARNATE [Irl] Nadir (Sentinel Recs - 2001)) que je trouve le son de Nadir plus « rock’n’roll » qu'avant sur The Last supper, plus grindcore aussi, êtes-vous totalement responsables pour ceci ou est-ce le travail avec Mieszko Talarczyk (NASUM) qui a fait ressortir cette facette ?

Plus « rock » ? Je vois ce que tu veux dire. Sur l'album précédent, nous nous étions concentrés à faire un album de death metal avec quelques parties de batterie grind mais pour Nadir nous étions obsédés par le seul but de faire des morceaux courts et brutaux alors peut-être que le son est un petit peu plus facile à saisir pour boire des bières en l'écoutant.

Ça nous gonfle un peu de jouer des morceaux de quatre minutes de metal quand on peut être encore plus extrêmes et intenses en compressant le morceau sur une seule. Je pense que les morceaux sont plus efficaces de cette façon donc si vous imaginez une métaphore du genre metal = rock progressif avec toute la démonstration qui va avec (par exemple MORBID ANGEL avec un solo de deux minutes sur Gateways…) et grindcore = rock’n’roll avec les arrangements minimalistes qui vont avec (un bon riff de guitare et de puissantes parties de batterie = un bon morceau).

Par rapport à l'investissement de Mieszko, on l’a choisi pour la production parce qu'il savait comment faire un bon CD de grind et les morceaux étaient écrits avant que nous partions pour le studio donc je ne vois pas comment il aurait pu avoir une influence sur la composition. Il en a eu une sur le son de guitare par contre parce que nous voulions sonner original (N. D. G. : oui c'est en fait ce que je voulais dire), son idée n'était pas de nous laisser utiliser des méthodes standard pour faire de la guitare heavy par exemple. On utiliserait plutôt normalement une pédale de distorsion Metal Zone avec un ampli Marshall pour un résultat comme celui que nous avons eu sur The Last supper mais pour Nadir nous avons utilisé une approche plus « vintage ». Ce que je veux dire c'est que nous avons utilisé une pédale Heavy Metal pour un type de son à la AC/DC avec un ampli Mesa Boogie. Je pense que nous avons obtenu l'effet que nous désirions.

Tous ces facteurs contribuent à la grande différence entre les deux albums.

Vous êtes maintenant chez Sentinel Records (Irlande), que s'est-il donc passé avec votre label précédent Season Of Mist ? Pensez-vous qu'il aurait pu mieux faire avec votre promotion ou y avait-il entre vous des désaccords extra-musicaux ?

Voilà une question récurrente dans la presse et ça ne m'ennuie jamais d'y répondre tant mon amertume à ce sujet est profonde. Je n'ai absolument aucun doute que Season Of Mist ne ressent rien à ce propos parce que nous ne sommes qu'un petit poisson pour eux mais le fait est qu'ils nous avaient promis un super deal et après la publication du CD nous n'avons eu droit qu’à peu de promotion. Je ne sais pas trop pourquoi parce que si moi j'avais payé pour réaliser un album, je l’aurais promu. Et en plus on a été énervés encore plus parce qu’il a signé YATTERING et s’en est bien mieux occupé. On lui a donc envoyé un mail pour faire annuler le contrat parce que nous étions mécontents. Il a fait des remarques arrogantes, ce qu'il fait toujours quand on essaye de discuter de quelque chose de sérieux avec lui puis il nous a laissés partir. Tant mieux. La raison pour laquelle on a choisi Sentinel, c'est parce que nous cherchions quelqu'un en qui nous pouvions avoir confiance, c'était un très important projet pour nous, notre deuxième chance si on peut dire après tous les problèmes subis auparavant. Nadir a de vrais morceaux puissants et il était vital de signer avec un label qui savait comment s'en occuper. Nous connaissons bien les deux personnes de Sentinel, ils vivent ici en Irlande comme nous, nous ont toujours soutenus même quand ils travaillaient avec Misanthropy Records, et même avant ça ils écrivaient des chroniques de nos démos avec Ablaze Magazine et caetera. Cette relation remonte au début des années 1990, je ne pense même pas que Season Of Mist était né à cette époque ! (N. D. G. : ha ha ha !!)

Pourquoi toujours enregistrer vos albums au nord de l'Europe (le premier en Finlande, le second en Suède) ? N’y avait-il donc aucun studio intéressant en Irlande ou avez-vous une raison précise pour de tels choix ?

Il n'y a pas de bon studio en Irlande. Par exemple, j'étais une fois dans un studio pour faire un enregistrement et quand j'ai tenté de décrire ce que je cherchais, l'ingénieur du son m'a dit qu'il allait me faire un véritable son, comme celui des FOO FIGHTERS, ce qui te donne une idée de la situation du coin (N. D. G. : pffff… Whaahaha !!)… Nous avons été envoyés en Finlande parce que le label avait un arrangement avec le gars là-bas et puis nous sommes allés en Suède parce que nous voulions travailler avec Mieszko et créer un bon son. Nous voulions même le meilleur et, vu ce qu'on avait entendu avec REGURGITATE et NASUM, c'était vraiment l'endroit où aller !

Vous avez joué quelques concerts avec les excellents IMPENDING DOOM d’Allemagne, était-ce une bonne expérience ? Quelques mots au sujet du public allemand ? Et, tant qu’à y être, au sujet du concert avec MORBID ANGEL à Dublin ?

IMPENDING DOOM sont les mecs les plus cool d’Allemagne, ils nous ont embarqués avec eux dans le bus, ont picolé avec nous, sont montés sur scène et ont chanté avec nous, ils se sont assurés que nous soyons payés, nourris et abreuvés chaque soir, ils nous ont aidés jusqu'à la gare ! Le public allemand était très motivé et c'est cool parce que nous pensions qu'ils étaient tous simplement fans de power metal, ils m'ont prouvé que j'avais tort.

MORBID ANGEL en un seul mot : instructif.

Avec Dead Church j'ai toujours voulu promouvoir le format vinyle comme l'ultime pour le metal, que pensez-vous au sujet des sorties sur format vinyle ? Y a-t-il une chance pour avoir un de ces jours une version vinyle de Nadir ? En existe-t-il une pour The Last souper ? Et n’étiez-vous pas sur le point de sortir un split 7’’ ou un truc du genre ? Avec qui voudriez-vous partager un disque ?

Ok j’ai de bonnes nouvelles pour toi mon ami. Nous avons causé avec Sentinel Records au sujet d'une version picture disc de Nadir pour l'année 2003 et ce sera disponible à la fois via notre site et via le site du label. Je cherche une licence pour The Last supper en vinyle avec un label mais je n'ai pas encore trouvé quelqu'un pour le moment, les intéressés devraient définitivement entrer en contact. On nous a demandé de faire un 7’’ avec des groupes pour un split mais pour le moment nous n'avons pas le temps entre les albums et les tournées, mais nous devrions faire ça cette année ou la suivante, gardez l’œil ouvert !

Vous avez sorti deux albums seulement en treize ans : si vous deviez changer quelque chose auriez-vous sorti plus d'albums ou préférez-vous prendre votre temps pour faire ce genre de choses ?

Nous n'étions pas assez sophistiqués pour sortir un CD au début des années 90, nous étions très jeunes avec très peu d'expérience et nous avions besoin de trouver les bons musiciens et nous focaliser avant de sortir quoi que ce soit. Nous aurions pu être signés chez Peaceville en 1994 mais cela aurait été trop tôt pour nous je pense. Nadir devrait être considéré comme notre première production CD, nous voulions remixer The Last supper mais Season of Mist a pensé que c'était suffisamment bon comme c'était, nos excuses donc pour la production… Il est vital de prendre du temps pour ce genre de choses, pourquoi réaliser de la merde ? Ce serait juste une trahison de demander aux fans du groupe d'acheter quelque chose pour lequel vous n'êtes pas satisfait, juste pour le plaisir de sortir un album chaque année ! Donc nous prendrons le temps puisque nous avons le contrôle là-dessus pour ne pas décevoir qui que ce soit, sans parler de nous-mêmes.

Le premier nom du groupe était BEREAVED : est-il toujours possible de trouver les démos de cette époque ? Je ne pense pas mais ne seriez-vous pas intéressés pour les ressortir ? Les titres sont-ils sur vos albums ou reste-t-il certains inédits ?

C'est possible parce que quelqu'un a piraté ces titres ici en Irlande, mais ce n'est pas en accord avec le groupe parce que seulement Bill et moi étions présents à cette époque, ça n'a vraiment rien à voir avec ABADDON INCARNATE à part que c'était une période de formation pour Bill et moi, un prototype. Le roulement des répétitions et l’éthique de travail était là donc quand Olan nous a rejoints ABADDON INCARNATE a commencé à prendre forme comment la phase mature, métamorphosée, de ce que ce qu’avait été un jour BEREAVED : au départ un truc à la fois chaotique et sans but comme BEREAVED puis, après une petite nuit des longs couteaux et la disparition de certains membres, ABADDON INCARNATE.

Avez-vous déjà joué une fois en France ? Si oui, comment était-ce ? Êtes-vous prêts à tourner en Europe et pourquoi pas partout ailleurs ? Je suppose que vous avez des boulots comme tout le monde, est-il facile de monter des dates ici et là ?

Nous avons joué à Strasbourg en France et rencontré plein de gens cool mais nous avons conduit pendant trente heures d'Espagne pour jouer là-bas et la salle était un vrai bordel, sans électricité, avec des ouvriers en train de construire des trucs mais nous devions faire un soundcheck immédiatement donc le concert a été annulé et déplacé vers une énorme salle de 1500 personnes de l'autre côté de la ville, nous avons dû partager la salle avec un groupe de space rock chrétien des USA et nous n'avons pas pu jouer jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient fini vers trois heures du mat' ou un truc du genre. Alors je me suis barré acheter quelques canettes de bière et visiter Strasbourg de nuit. À un moment je me suis arrêté pour pisser un coup et votre putain de police est arrivée avec des armes automatiques dans un van, m’ont arrêté et mis dans une cellule ces bâtards ! Alors après quelques heures d'interrogatoire qui ont été assez drôle puisque je ne comprends pas le français, ils m'ont laissé partir (N. D. G. : la police française restera toujours un mystère…). Je suis retourné juste à temps pour monter sur scène et jouer le show sans avoir pu dormir pendant quarante heures, nous avons vendu un CD ou deux et peut-être un t-shirt puis avons procédé à un petit trajet vers le sex-shop d’Aix-la-Chapelle en Allemagne. Tout ça n'était pas la faute du promoteur, mais plutôt celle de l'organisateur de cette putain de salle. Dans tous les cas, ce sera meilleur la prochaine fois j'espère (N. D. G. : ça ne devrait pas être très difficile !) Comme j'ai dit pour la première question, nous tournerons en avril en France (les 9, 10 et 11) et et serons au Skull Fucked Festival le 26. Je ne connais pas les endroits de ces concerts mais vous pouvez envoyer un mail pour en savoir plus.

Je ne connais pas vraiment l’underground irlandais, pourrais-tu nous présenter quelques groupes valables pour entrer en contact avec eux ?

Je recommanderai CONDEMNED, THE SWARM, PUTREFY, PRIMAL DAWN, COLDWAR si vous aimez le brutal et si vous aimez les choses plus atmosphériques, black, doom épique et compagnie, essayez d'écouter MOURNING BELOVETH, GEASA, PRIMORDIAL. Tous ces gens peuvent être trouvés via les liens qu'ils ont balancés sur internet, que ferions-nous d'ailleurs sans internet (N. D. G. : comme d'habitude, l’annuaire et le putain de bureau de poste !) ?

Hail. Please tell us what happens to ABADDON INCARNATE at the moment ? Are there some dates planned ? What about Nadir ?? Are the reviews good in the metal press ?

Hello, ABADDON INCARNATE is very active at the moment. We are departing for an Australian tour on the 1st day of February and will be there for a month spreading our brutal grind warfare. When we return we will have a months rest and then depart for a month on the road around Europe on a Co Headliner with DESECRATION in April. This will be organized by Frances very own Skullfucked promotions and we will close the tour playing at the Skullfucked Festival.

As regards reviews in the metal press we are having a big support from underground webzines and so forth but big commercial magazines take little interest in us because we do not have the money to buy favors from them yet. But time will tell we all have a good feeling about the future and you will be hearing a lot more from ABADDON INCARNATE in the time to come.

I say in the review that I find the sound on Nadir more « rockish » as earlier on The last supper, more grindcore too, are you totally responsible for that or is your work with Mieszko that we can feel here ?

Rockish? I know what you mean. On The Last supper we were concentrating on making a death metal album with some grind drum parts. But with Nadir we were obsessed with only making brutal short songs. So maybe they sound a bit easier to sing along to or drink beer with as a party album.

We are getting pissed off playing 4 minute long death metal songs when we can be even more intense and extreme with compressing the whole song down to 1 minute. I think the songs work better this way. So if you imagine as a metaphor death metal = prog rock and all the self indulgence that goes with that (for example MORBID ANGEL with a 2 minute solo on Gateways) and grind = rock and roll and all the minimalist arrangement that goes hand and hand with that genre (for example good guitar riff + powerful drum part = good song)

As regards Mieszko’s involvement. He was chosen by us to produce because he knew what was involved in making a good grind CD and the songs were written before we got to the studio so I don’t see how he had an influence on the song writing. He did have a big influence on the guitar sound though because we wanted to sound original (N. D. G. : yeah, that’s what I meant…). His idea was not to let us use standard accepted procedure in making heavy guitar sounds. For example we would normally use a Metal Zone distortion pedal with a Marshall amplifier and as a result that is the sound we got on The Last supper but for the Nadir sound we used a more « Vintage » approach. By this I mean we used a « Heavy metal Pedal » for a more AC/DC type of crunch and a Mesa Boogie Amp. I think we got the effect we desired.

All these factors contribute to the vast difference between the two albums.

Ok, let's now talk about business. You’re now on Sentinel Records from Ireland. What happened with your former label Season of Mist? Did you find they could have done better with your promotion and so on or were there some extra musical discordance ?

Yes this a very popular question among the press and I never tire of answering it because my bitterness at this whole episode runs deep. I have absolutely no doubt that Season of Mist have no feelings on the subject because we are only small fish to them at any rate in anyway. But the fact is that we were promised a great deal from this record label and after the release of the CD there was very little promotion given to us. I don’t know the reasoning behind this because if I paid money to have an album released I would promote it etc etc.

However we got really pissed off because he signed YATTERING then and promoted them a great deal more and we saw what the situation was. We wrote him a mail and asked to be released from contract because we were unhappy. He made some arrogant remarks which he always does when you try to discuss anything serious with him and then let us go.

Good riddance.

The reason we chose Sentinel was that we were looking for someone we could trust. This was a very important release for us because it was our second chance so to speak after all the problems with The Last supper. Nadir also had some very powerful songs and songwriting put into it so it was vital to sign with a company who knew how to handle it. We have history with the two guys from Sentinel as they live here in Ireland with us and have always supported us even when they worked with Misanthropy Records (R. I. P.) and before this when they would write reviews of our demos with Ablaze magazine and so forth. I mean this relationship goes way back to the early Nineties. I don’t think Season Of Mist was even born back then (N. D. G. : ha ha ha !!).

Why always record your albums in the Northern part of Europe? The first in Finland, second in Sweden? Isn’t there a good studio in Ireland ? Or do you have a precise reason to choose where, who, etc.?

Because there is no good studio in Ireland, for example once I was in a studio doing a recording and this a top of the range studio if you know what I mean, and I was trying to describe what I was looking for and the engineer was saying he was going to get me a real heavy sound like the FOO FIGHTERS. So that gives you an idea of what there like over here (N. D. G. : pffff… whaahaha!!).

We were sent of Finland because the record company had some deal with the guy up there and we went to Sweden because we wanted to work with Miezsko and create a good sound because we wanted to the best we can by the songs we wrote for Nadir and to our ears, with what we heard with REGURGITATE and NASUM that was the place to go.

You’ve played a few gigs with the excellent German death-metallers IMPENDING DOOM. Was it a good experience or not ? What about the German crowd ? One word about the gig with MORBID ANGEL in Dublin?

IMPENDING DOOM are the coolest fuckers in Germany. They brought us all around Germany in their bus, drank with us, got up on stage and sang with us. They made sure we got paid and fed and got our beer every night. They helped us get to the train station and they were just cool guys. The German crowd were very supportive of ABADDON INCARNATE which is cool because I thought they were all power metal freaks. I was proved wrong.

MORBID ANGEL in one word ? Enlightening.

Always with Dead Church I’ve wanted to promote the vinyl format as the ultimate one for metal!! What do you think about the vinyl releases ? Is there a chance to have one day the Nadir LP version? Does exist such a version for The Last supper ?? Didn’t you think about a split 7’’EP or shit like that ? With which band would you like to share a wax ?

OK I have good news for you my friend. We have been talking with Sentinel Records about a picture disk release for Nadir in the year 2003. And it will be available from both mail orders. (N. D. G. : aaargh !!)

I am searching to license The Last supper on LP with a record company and have not found any one suitable yet but any interested parties should definitely get in touch.

We have been asked to do a 7" with some bands as a split but as it stands at the moment we don’t have time with the tours and new album. But we are going to do this year or the next year. Be warned.

You’ve only put out two albums in 13 years. If you could change something, would you have put out more albums than two or do you think it’s better to take the time to do those things??

We were not sophisticated enough to release a CD in the early 90’s we were very young with little experience and we needed to find the right musicians and focus before we released a CD. We possibly might have been signed to Peaceville in 1994 but it would be too early for us I think. Nadir should have been the first CD production wise. We wanted to remix it but Season of Mist taught it was good the way it was, so apologies for the production on the The Last Supper.

It is vital to take time with these things. Why release shit? It is betrayal to ask ABADDON INCARNATE fans to buy something with which we are not happy with just for the sake of releasing a CD every year. So we will take time with that which is in our power to control i.e. the song writing. We would be letting everyone down otherwise not to mention letting ourselves down as well.

The first name of the band was BEREAVED. Is it still possible to find the demos from this era ? I don’t think… Aren’t you interested in re-releasing it ? Are all the tracks on your albums or are there some that are still unreleased ?

It’s possible because some people bootleg it here in Ireland but it is not endorsed by us because only me and Bill are remainder from those times. It is nothing really to do with ABADDON INCARNATE. Except as a learning period for me and Bill and it was a prototype. The rehearsal schedule was there and work ethic so when Olan joined ABADDON INCARNATE started to take shape as the mature side of what was once BEREAVED.

Like a Metamorphism. You have a chaotic, unfocussed heap of shit = BEREAVED, have a small night of long knife episode and remove some members and come out the other side ABADDON INCARNATE. Metamorphis complete.

Did you play one time in France ? If yes how was it ? Are you ready to tour Europe or why not elsewhere ? I suppose you do work as everybody? Is it easy to set up some dates ?

We played in Strasbourg in France, and met some real cool people. But we drove for 30 hours from Spain to play there and the venue was in chaos with no electricity and some construction workers on the stage building things and we had to sound check immediately. So the concert had to be cancelled and relocated to this huge hall with a 1500 capacity on the other side of town.

We had to share the venue with some christian space rock band from the U.S. and could not play until they were finished at 3 in the morning or whatever. So I left to buy some cans of beer and take a look at Strasbourg at night. I stopped to take a piss on the side of the street and your fucking police come with automatic weapons in a police van, arrest me and put me in a cell, bastards. So after a few hours of interrogation which was funny because I don’t understand French they let me go (N. D. G. : the French police will always be a mystery… Pfff… ahahaha!!!!) .

So I made it back just in time to get on stage to play the show after having no sleep for 40 hours. We sold a CD or two maybe a shirt. And proceed to travel to the porno shop in Aachen Germany.

It was not the promoter’s fault everything went pear shaped. It’s the fucking venue manager. Any way it will be better next time I hope.

Like I said in the first question we will be touring in April in France on the 9th 10th 11th and at the Skull Fucked Festival on the 26th I do not know the location of these shows so you have to mail Skull Fucked to find out I am sure he will be glad to help you.

I don’t really the Irish underground? Could you present us some worthy bands to get in touch with ?

I would recommend CONDEMNED, THE SWARM, PUTREFY, PRIMAL DAWN, COLDWAR if you like brutal shit and if you like some atmospheric black, doom, epic shit or whatever check out MOURNING BELOVETH, GEASA, PRIMORDIAL.
